bend or break
alexandria

alexandria
was a town I vaguely knew,
nothing especially special,
nothing quite like the likes of you,
and anything I needed from there,
well, it sure seemed close enough.
never guessed it might become
the distance between us
and if I stay where I am,
rooted down in place,
the way to alexandria,
it surely shall remain the same.
distances don’t change
that is unless you move.
of all of this I was quite convinced,
until the day that I met you.
alexandria
never seemed that far
’til alexandria
was where you are,
and all the roads
that lead there now
seem so much further
when you’re not around.
and then in my memory
I cast a shadow looking back at me.
she tempts with her fingertips,
wanting eyes, and kissing lips.
and I won’t try to hide
the ways I feel about you.
how polite can we be
and to ourselves remain true?
